Therapy can feel strange at first. It is not like going to see a doctor who will prescribe something to make you better. It is about you helping yourself to understand how you think, feel and behave and to understand the defences you have created that are now getting in the way of you leading an autonomous life. I am sensitive to this and will take care to help you work through it.
In general, I use counselling with clients who come to therapy with a clear issue to be worked through – for example, as a result of a recent bereavement or a relationship breakdown.
I will use psychotherapy with clients who come to therapy with issues of longer duration or those that may be rooted in their past – for example, issues associated with eating disorders, attachment, depression and abuse.
